4 Important Ways to Start the New Year with Great Dental Health

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year, filled with love, laughter, and health! DeCapite Family Dentistry wants all its patients in the Metro Detroit area to enjoy the holidays and to look forward to a safe, healthy 2021. 2020 has been a year like no other with a pandemic that has affected all of us this year. As we close 2020, we must be positive with the possibilities for next year and may even make a few resolutions with new determination to make positive changes in our lives.

Dr. Jim DeCapite strongly recommends these four ways to start the new year with great dental health:

  • Make healthier food choices: Fresh, crunchy fruits and vegetables are great for teeth as well as for overall physical health. Dairy products and sugarless gum are also good choices for dental health.
  • Drink more water. We always think about keeping hydrated during the hot summer months, but it’s also very important during the colder months. A great resolution for dental health and for overall health is to drink plenty of water every day, throughout the year.
  • Brush and floss regularly: Brushing twice a day, for at least two minutes each time, and flossing every day can do wonders for dental health. The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry will be happy to show our patients the proper brushing techniques, to get the most out of that four minutes a day!
  • Visit the dentist for a cleaning and a check-up: Regular visits can help the dentist keep teeth extra clean while also checking for issues. Seeing the dentist every six months can help make sure any small issues don’t become bigger problems!

The team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is ready to help patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding communities learn more techniques so everyone can enjoy good dental health into the new year.

Call us today at (734) 744-5457 for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning. We are open to serve our patients by appointment and are taking all the appropriate precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Thankful Keys for Great Smiles

Even though 2020 has been a challenging one, our team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. We are thankful for our patients, for our team of dental professionals, and for our supportive greater Detroit Metro community!

The Thanksgiving season is a great time to think about things to be thankful for, such as these three keys Dr. Jim DeCapite offers for dental health:

  • Brushing four minutes at a time is all it takes: Even the busiest person has time to brush properly and effectively. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time. Of course, don’t forget to floss. These four minutes will go a long way toward maintaining good dental health.
  • A checkup twice a year protects dental health: A checkup and professional cleaning twice a year will enable the team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry to check for issues and to prevent bigger issues from happening, while making sure our patients’ teeth are professionally cleaned and healthy.
  • Good dental health helps with overall health: There are several benefits to maintaining good dental health, including helping to prevent heart disease and respiratory illnesses that have been linked to gum disease. Healthy teeth contribute to overall health!

This year, we can be thankful for dental health and the fact that it is so easy to maintain healthy teeth and gums. The team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is ready to help patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding communities enjoy good dental health.

Call us today at (734) 744-5457 for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning, for good dental health throughout the upcoming holidays. We are open to serve our patients by appointment and are taking all the appropriate precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Bootiful Tips for Halloween Treaters

As the leaves change colors and the weather turns cooler, it’s time to plan for the fall holidays. In October, most thoughts will turn to Halloween and some form of new trick or treating in this pandemic world. This year, especially, we encourage everyone to stay safe and healthy, whatever the celebrations may look like in Livonia and the Detroit Metro area. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry we encourage our patients to focus on good dental health as well as good physical and mental health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers “bootiful” three tips for Halloween treats that are healthy, tasty, and fun:

  • Get creative with vegetables: Yes, vegetables for Halloween! The kids don’t have to know how healthy these treats are, of course. Carrot strips and celery sticks make great broomsticks when string cheese becomes the broom. Sliced sweet potatoes are easily carved into scary faces that can be baked with a little seasoning. Bell peppers can become jack-o-lanterns filled with healthy zucchini and broccoli. Kids (and adults) will love these fun treats that are good for them!
  • Limit the sweet treats: At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand the temptation of candy corn and miniature chocolate bars. We encourage parents to set limits for kids – and for themselves – and make sure everyone is aware of the effects of sugar on the teeth as well as the rest of the body. Have a treat or two each day but don’t overdo it. Brushing right after eating candy is also a must.
  • Offer alternatives: Halloween treats don’t have to necessarily be food. Kids love stickers, toys, puzzles, and other fun games. Dr. Jim DeCapite and his professional staff want our patients to be happy and healthy, so we encourage everyone to enjoy some alternative treats and limit the sugary snacks and sweet treats.

The team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is focused on helping our patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding communities enjoy good dental health throughout the fall. We are open to serve our patients by appointment and are taking all the appropriate precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Contact us at 734 744 5457 today for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning, to get ready for the upcoming holidays. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Very Important Reasons to See Dr. DeCapite During the Pandemic

We understand our patients have a lot of concerns during these challenging times. Rest assured that we take every step necessary to ensure everyone’s health and safety at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. It is very important for our patients in Livonia and the Motor City to continue maintaining good dental health throughout the pandemic, including visiting the dentist for a cleaning and a checkup.

Dr. Jim encourages his patients with three very important reasons to seek professional dental care during the pandemic:

  • Damage from teeth grinding: These are stressful times. Many people are now grinding their teeth who probably didn’t do so before. Damage from grinding teeth can include damaged teeth as well as conditions such as TMJ and even headaches. A visit to Dr. DeCapite enables us to find and treat these issues before they become too serious.
  • Delays in cleaning: Understandably, people in the Detroit metro area and across the country have been hesitant about going to the dentist during the pandemic. However, it is critically important to get that professional cleaning and checkup to maintain good dental health as well as good overall health. Our staff works diligently to ensure the health and safety of all of our patients now and throughout the year.
  • Shifts in routines: Staying home, working at home, and having kids at home that are learning remotely, disrupts everyone’s normal routines. That may include the two times each day set aside for brushing and flossing. When these good habits are not kept up, dental issues such as painful cavities can arise. A visit to our office is essential preventing and treating these dental problems.

It is very important to maintain good dental health during the pandemic. Our dental team is focused on ensuring that all of our patients receive the best treatment possible. We are taking every precaution to keep patients and staff safe and healthy.

We are open to serve our patients by appointment. Contact us today for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning that are so important to good dental health during this pandemic. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, only 20 minutes from anywhere on the Westside.

4 Great Ideas for Metro Detroit Smiles

Oh, the choices we face when it comes to choosing dental products! What kind of toothpaste is best? Which floss makes more sense? Brushing and flossing regularly, of course, are essential for good dental health. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we are focused on helping our patients in Livonia

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers four helpful ideas for excellent dental health:

  • Choose a toothpaste that will be used: While mostly a matter of personal taste, choosing a toothpaste can be overwhelming given all the available choices. Decide whether a flavored toothpaste will entice family members (especially kids!) to brush longer and more often. Other factors to keep in mind are cavity prevention, which is always critical, whitening needs, and sensitive teeth. The best toothpaste is one that will be used regularly!
  • Select an appropriate type of dental floss: Flavor is also a consideration when choosing dental floss. Mint-flavored floss can add to that feeling of a fresh mouth and might also encourage family members to floss more often. Waxed floss slides easily between teeth, helping to make sure those tight areas are properly cleaned. Keep a small container of floss handy for the office or on trips.
  • Get a regular checkup: Even when it feels like teeth and gums are in good health, a dental checkup can ensure that there are no cavities or potential trouble spots. It’s always best to get that checkup every six months to catch small problems before they turn into big ones.
  • Go for a professional cleaning: Toothpaste and dental floss are essential products to have in the home and it’s important to brush and floss regularly. It’s also very important to go for a professional cleaning regularly to get those spots that a toothbrush and floss can’t always reach.

The office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is now open to serve our patients by appointment. Contact us today for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning. Our professional staff is always happy to answer questions and give suggestions for better dental health. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Healthy Tips for the Hot Detroit Summer

Summer is here! Although this year is a little different, we’re still enjoying safe cookouts and outdoor activities with our immediate family members. It’s important to remember some key points about staying healthy throughout the hot summer months. That includes maintaining good dental health. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients in Livonia and the Motor City to know about healthy options for food and drink this summer.

Dr. DeCapite offers three great tips for a healthy summer and a healthy mouth:

  • Raw fruits and vegetables: Crunchy carrots and juicy apples are refreshing during the hot summer months and they offer a lot of health benefits. Also keep pears, seedless watermelon, strawberries, celery, and raw broccoli on hand for snacks or appetizers. They’re good for the teeth and for overall health!
  • Crushed ice: It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the year but it’s particularly important when the weather is hot. Ice is great for keeping drinks and people cool, but crushed ice is much better for dental health than cubes. Many people like to chew ice cubes, which can damage enamel or possibly even chip a tooth! Crushed ice in a glass is best for summer health.
  • Infused water: Drop some healthy fruit into a pitcher of fresh, clean water for a refreshing and hydrating treat. Choose non-citrus fruits as the acid in limes and lemons can be harsh on teeth. Infused water is good for dental health and looks pretty on the table!

Stay healthy this summer by following these tips from our staff. Remember to keep hydrated and safe throughout the hottest months.

The office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is open to serve our patients by appointment. Now is a good time for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning. Call us today for an appointment at 734 744 5457.

Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Important Tips to Maintain Dental Health in a Pandemic

The office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is open once again! We are here to serve our patients, following CDC guidelines, and we want everyone to understand how to take better care of themselves for safety and good health. While we have put in an array of new procedures to keep our patients and staff safe, we must limit the number of patients we are able to see each day. Yet, we are still focused on providing the highest quality services that will help everyone enjoy good dental health.

Our team understands that it is particularly important to maintain dental health as well as a healthy immune system during the pandemic.

Here are three important tips for staying safe and maintaining good dental health throughout the pandemic and beyond:

  • Continue to brush and floss thoroughly: Dental health can offer clues about a person’s overall health. Brushing twice a day for two minutes each time is highly recommended, not only for good dental health but also for a healthy immune system, which is so important now.
  • Schedule a checkup and cleaning: We know it’s been a while since our patients have been able to schedule non-emergency appointments. Now is the time to get that all-important checkup and dental cleaning. Our professional dental team have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure everyone can get the dental treatment they need to continue maintaining good dental health.
  • Be a patient with patience: To ensure everyone’s safety and well-being, our staff will be allowing for more downtime between appointments, to promote social distancing and to provide more time for proper sanitation of our equipment. We have also removed hard-to-disinfect items, such as magazines, from our waiting room.

Dr. Jim and his staff are concerned about every patient well-being. We are truly dedicated to providing quality dental care in the safest environment.

The office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Please call us at (734) 744-5457 if you have any questions about dental health or to make an appointment.

5 Reasons Kids Should See a Dentist on a Regular Basis (Reopening May 29th)

The school year has been over for a while. We all have all been staying home and maintaining our social distances since mid-March to keep everyone safe and healthy. Summer will be here soon, though, just like every other year! Summer is a great time to be sure children of all ages in Livonia and the Motor City are visiting the dentist. As early as May 29th, DeCapite Dentistry will be busy again sharing with children the many benefits of seeing the dentist regularly and knowledgeable kids are always more comfortable with their visits.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants kids of all ages in the greater Detroit area to look forward to their dental visits and to get excited about the five great reasons to see the dentist regularly, starting this summer:

  • Checking tooth alignment: As a child’s baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth start to come in, it’s important to make sure all the teeth are lining up correctly.
  • Preventing cavities: The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry checks all our patients regularly for signs of potential cavities and other dental issues.
  • Treating cavities: When cavities do happen, it’s important that we catch them early. A regular dental visit will keep small cavities from becoming larger ones, particularly as young children dip into the sugary treats over the summer months!
  • Checking brushing skills: Jim DeCapite and his professional dental team take the time to make sure kids (and adults) know how to brush and floss properly, so they will have the proper skills that will benefit their dental health throughout their lives.
  • Cleaning for good dental health: Even when children are doing a good job of brushing and flossing, they still need to see the dentist regularly for a thorough dental cleaning. This applies to adults too!

Dr. Jim encourages patients of all ages to visit the dentist regularly, for healthy, happy teeth!

Please know we will be back in the office after May 29th.

3 Important Benefits of Pandemic Dental Health

While the office of Dr. Jim DeCapite is closed for now, we encourage our clients to continue exercising good dental health practices at home. We also encourage everyone to stay home and stay safe during these challenging times! While home, make sure everyone in the family brushes and flosses regularly and properly for great dental health. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we always stress to our patients in the Metro Detroit area that understanding how to take care of their dental health impacts their overall health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants everyone in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding region to learn the three important benefits of good dental health during this pandemic:

  • Possible heart disease prevention: Gingivitis is an inflammation in the mouth caused by bacteria, which can play a significant role in clogging arteries. Patients with infections of the gum can be at a greater risk of heart attack and stroke, as the bacteria in the mouth impacts the amount of plaque in the carotid artery especially.
  • Supports digestion: Chewing starts the digestive process. When there are problems in the mouth, particularly missing or painful teeth that keep the chemical processes from working correctly, that can lead to other problems throughout the digestive system, including intestinal failure, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive issues.
  • Diabetes management: People who have problems with their dental health may have a more difficult time controlling their blood sugar levels. Gum disease can have a significant impact on insulin resistance in the body. People with diabetes also tend to have more problems with their dental health. We encourage our patients with diabetes to take extra care in maintaining good dental health, to help prevent further complications.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about the many ways good dental health can impact overall good health.

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Contact our office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

It is important to note that the offices of Dr. Jim DeCapite are closed until further notice. Please like and follow our Facebook Page for additional updated information. Thank you.

Be safe. Be well. Wear a mask. Wear gloves. Use sanitizer. Wash your hands.

We are all together, together.

4 Spring Cleaning Tips for Great Dental Health

Who doesn’t love spring and Easter in Metro Detroit. The sun seems to shine brighter as the flowers are starting to bloom, and warmer weather is on its way! In Livonia, Redford, and all the surrounding areas, we are more than ready for spring and the upcoming Easter season! It’s a great time of year to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and focus on our dental health. Dental health is particularly important as Easter approaches, with its chocolate bunnies and candy eggs!

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants to help everyone in the Motor City and beyond with these 4 spring cleaning tips for good dental health this spring and all year round:

  • Limit sugar-filled Easter candy: Easter time is so much fun, with egg hunts and family gatherings but it also means a lot of chocolate and sugar will be eaten! Enjoy a few nibbles of that chocolate bunny or a bite or two of the sweet treats that taste so good, but in limited amounts for better dental health!
  • Enjoy fresh, crunchy fruit and vegetables: Fresh, raw fruits and vegetables can be just as sweet and tasty as candy. A crunchy, juicy apple can be just as satisfying and will help keep the mouth clean and healthy!
  • Remember to floss and brush: After indulging on that chocolate bunny, it is especially important to floss and brush! Ask Jim DeCapite about proper flossing and brushing techniques that will keep mouths healthy even after indulging in a few sweet treats.
  • Schedule a dental cleaning: Spring is the perfect time of year to schedule a thorough dental cleaning. While brushing and flossing every day is great for dental health, a dental cleaning takes it one step further. A professional cleaning with DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry leaves the mouth healthy and the teeth ready for a beautiful spring smile!

Spring is the perfect time to focus on good dental health. While we work on spring cleaning our homes, we need to also focus on keeping our mouths and gums clean and healthy!

We want our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit to take steps toward having a healthy mouth. We are ready to schedule that very important appointment for a dental cleaning and checkup for all our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities!

We also accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Call the office today to set an appointment!

It is important to note that the offices of Dr. Jim DeCapite are closed until further notice. Please like and follow our Facebook Page for additional updated information. Thank you.
