3 Tips for Healthy Holiday Season Smiles

Holiday parties and family meals are something to look forward to as we get closer to Thanksgiving, Hannukah, and Christmas. Tasty treats and homemade dishes are always amazing in the Metro Detroit area during this time of year. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to enjoy the gatherings, including all the snacks and special meals, while still keeping their holiday smiles healthy.

Dr. Jim DeCapite has three tips for healthy holiday smiles so everyone can enjoy good dental health and a fun and happy holiday season:

  • Watch the sticky foods: Dried fruit sounds healthy and is very popular during the holiday season. However, it can also be very sticky and can harm teeth. When eating dried fruit such as cranberries, drink lots of water to rinse out the mouth afterward, then brush carefully.
  • Be careful with hard candy: Another very popular holiday treat is hard candy. These tasty treats are not only filled with sugar, but they can also break or chip a tooth! Be careful with any food that is hard, including some nuts!
  • Choose healthy options: Lean proteins also abound during the holidays, including poultry, fish, and lean beef. These are great for overall health as well as for good dental health. Healthy choices such as whole grains and fat-free or low-fat cheeses are also delicious options that are great for a healthy holiday smile.

Now is a good time to schedule a dental cleaning and checkup, too. Our expert staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry want our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit to enjoy a healthy mouth throughout the holidays and into the new year. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. DeCapite knows how to keep smiles healthy and happy.

DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!

3 Ways to Keep Kids’ Teeth Healthy at Halloween

Happy Halloween! We all remember when masks were the norm only when trick or treating. Now it is often required where everyone gathers. While wearing masks can protect our kids from contracting viruses, many other protective coverings can protect mouth and teeth, especially during athletic practices and games. Now that school is back in session in the Metro Detroit area and kids are playing sports, they need to take precautions for their dental health. Even though schedules may be getting hectic as families in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, and Plymouth are going to school and work this fall, it’s important to take time to protect those kids’ teeth and mouths!

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three ways to keep kids’ teeth healthy this fall and throughout the year:

  • Protection for kids who play sports: Fall is a great time for kids’ sports, including soccer and football. We can help protect their teeth and face with a mouthguard, properly fitted by a dental professional, so they can play with more confidence. A mouthguard can protect against broken or chipped teeth as well as keep their tongue and lips safe.
  • Pack healthy foods in their lunchboxes: Kids may think that healthy foods are boring and don’t taste good, but healthy choices can be fun and delicious. Pack some chopped veggies and dip or sliced fruit and yogurt in the kids’ lunchboxes. Let them create their own tasty, healthy treats. If they make it, they’ll be more excited about taking it to school and eating it!
  • Focus on flossing and brushing every day: Even though everyone’s schedule gets a little more hectic as we head into the school year, it’s very important to continue to make sure everyone in the family takes time to brush and floss every day. Remember to get the kids, and the rest of the family, in for a dental checkup and cleaning, too, to maintain good dental health throughout the year.

The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry and our families are excited about the upcoming school year in the Metro Detroit area. Contact us today for an appointment for help keep those kids’ teeth healthy. The rest of the family is welcome for their checkups and cleaning appointments also!

Our professional staff encourages everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about the many ways to enjoy the highest quality dental health.

Our office is open by appointment. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Contact our office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

4 Motor City “Back to School” Toothbrush Tips

When shopping for school clothes and supplies in the Metro Detroit area, take the time to pick out new toothbrushes for each member of the family as well. A good toothbrush is the number one tool a family can have for ensuring good dental health. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. Give them a place to dry out between uses. Make new toothbrushes the new tradition in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Northville Township, and Plymouth, and include them with the new pencils and notebooks!

Dr. Jim DeCapite has four top “Back to School” toothbrush tips for choosing just the right toothbrush for each person in the family:

  • Look for the ADA seal of approval: The American Dental Association (ADA) seal ensures that experts approve of the toothbrush and that they vouch for its safety and effectiveness. The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry can also provide recommendations for the best toothbrush for each of our patients.
  • Choose softer bristles: When brushing for two minutes, using the appropriate technique, soft bristles are best for removing plaque and debris. Bristles that are too stiff are more likely to be harder on gums and enamel.
  • Choose a handle that fits well: There is no “one size fits all” type of toothbrush handle. Some people are better able to hold one that is angled or has a flexible neck. The important aspect of picking out an appropriate handle is to be sure the toothbrush can be held appropriately for two minutes of brushing.
  • Pick a fun color: Everyone has a favorite color and that applies to their toothbrush also. Kids, especially, are more likely to want to use a toothbrush that is a fun color or has their favorite cartoon character on it!

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we help all our patients learn more about choosing the right toothbrush and the right toothpaste for their particular needs. We also provide great tips for brushing effectively, two minutes a day, twice a day.

3 Dental Health Goals for Senior and Boomer Adults

In today’s health and safety environment, it’s even more important to do what’s necessary to maintain good health, including dental health. Dr. DeCapite understands that many people are concerned about their own safety when considering whether to venture out to public places, like their dentist’s office.  However, we also know how critical it is to get the quality care that comes with a professional checkup and cleaning.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants to reassure our senior patients in the Metro Detroit area that we are here to help with three dental health goals:

  • Be proactive about gum disease: The CDC says that about 2 in 3 (68%) adults age 65 years and older have gum disease. Visiting the dentist regularly is a great way to catch issues in the gums before it turns to periodontitis, a common concern for older adults. Preventing gum disease can also help prevent heart disease, a serious concern for older adults.
  • Maintain healthy teeth: Older adults are also more prone to losing teeth when they are not cared for properly. A regular visit to the office of DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry can help us catch small cavities before they become big problems. We know that extensive procedures are not fun at any age and work with our patients to keep those teeth and gums as healthy as possible.
  • Maintain good overall health: Good nutrition depends on being able to eat properly without pain, so maintaining healthy teeth can also contribute to a healthier body overall. Good dental health is connected to a proper immune system, a healthy heart, and many other health goals for older adults.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we care about all our patient’s dental health and overall well-being. We are particularly concerned that older adults need to continue to visit our office on a regular basis, to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Our professional staff encourages everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about the many ways that a regular checkup and cleaning can help them enjoy the highest quality dental health.

Our office is open by appointment. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Contact our office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

3 Reasons Not to Skip that Detroit Summer Dental Exam

Even when brushing and flossing every day, it’s still important to have a professional cleaning and checkup regularly. In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a professional cleaning every 6 months and a set of x-rays every 12 months. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure our patients’ health and safety. We are focused on helping all our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding region enjoy good dental health throughout the summer and the rest of the year.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants everyone in the Metro Detroit area to be aware of the three reasons not to skip a summer dental exam:

  • Brushing alone doesn’t get everything: While it is important to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day for good dental health, there are still some areas that the toothbrush just can’t clean thoroughly enough. A professional dental cleaning will help get rid of cavity-causing plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Tooth decay can be stopped when it’s caught early: A cavity can quickly become a more severe problem if not treated early. Putting off a checkup can cause cavities to create even more decay, become more painful, and possibly require more extensive treatment.
  • Prevention is easier and less expensive than repair: Maintaining good dental health with regular checkups and dental cleaning is easier on the wallet as well as on the teeth and gums. Extensive dental treatment is expensive. When a cavity is not caught early, it can potentially require an expensive root canal or crown that is also more time-consuming for the patient than a routine preventive exam.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we care about our patients’ dental health and overall well-being. Our professional staff encourages everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about the ways that a regular checkup and cleaning can help. We want our patients to enjoy the highest quality dental health.

Our office is open by appointment. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Contact our office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

3 Important Benefits of Spring Whitening

It appears the only time people see us smile these days is outside and six feet apart. Yet it’s still important to feel good about that smile regardless of who sees it. Keeping up with good dental health is a great start for beautiful smiles, but sometimes it takes a little extra to get brighter and whiter. We want to see our patients throughout Livonia, Redford, and all the surrounding areas enjoy a happy and healthy smile!

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three important benefits of professional teeth whitening treatments for our patients across the Motor City:

  • Corrects stained teeth: Brushing and flossing regularly are important for healthy teeth and gums, but sometimes those yellow, stained teeth need a little extra help. A professional tooth whitening treatment can get the stains out that may be caused by food, drink, or aging, and leave teeth clean and bright.
  • An almost permanent solution: There are many options available for whitening teeth, but they usually must be used repeatedly to get the same results. A professional treatment will restore brightness and bring that smile alive, with only occasional treatments needed to maintain that new smile.
  • Safer than over-the-counter treatments: While these products might work, they may be temporary. Also, over-the-counter whitening treatments may cause damage to the teeth and gums. A professional treatment at the office of Dr. Jim DeCapite is supervised and managed by dental experts to keep patients safe and healthy.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit to enjoy a beautiful smile and good dental health this spring and throughout the year. Schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning and checkup today. While you’re here, ask our professional staff about a whitening treatment for an even more beautiful smile.

We look forward to seeing all our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities! We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Call the office today to set an appointment!

3 Dental Health Tips for the Detroit Spring

Springtime in Detroit is a time for refreshing and renewing. As the sun begins to warm the air and blooming flowers start to beautify our yards and gardens, our thoughts turn to cleaner homes and healthier bodies. Spring cleaning is not only a good idea for houses but also a great strategy for dental health. Here in Metro Detroit and Livonia, Redford, and all the surrounding areas, we are all ready to enjoy us some spring!

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants to help everyone in the Motor City and beyond with these three dental health tips for this spring and throughout the year:

  • Floss and brush twice a day: Keep those teeth and gums fresh and clean every day by flossing and brushing regularly. Remember the 2×2 rule – brush twice a day for two minutes each to get teeth clean and keep gums healthy. Dr. DeCapite’s professional staff is happy to answer questions about proper flossing and brushing techniques.
  • Enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables: Eating healthier is one of the changes we usually make in the spring. Fresh, raw fruits and vegetables can also be great for dental health. Crunchy, juicy fruits, such as apples, are incredibly satisfying and will help keep the mouth clean and healthy!
  • Come in for a dental cleaning: Spring cleaning is not just for the home. Take the time to schedule an appointment for a thorough dental cleaning now, to help maintain great dental health throughout the summer. While brushing and flossing every day is great for dental health, a dental cleaning is even better for gums and teeth.

When spring cleaning for that great smile this year, think about keeping those teeth and gums clean and healthy. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the west side of Metro Detroit to enjoy a delightful spring and amazing dental health throughout the year.

Schedule that very important appointment for a dental cleaning and checkup today. We look forward to seeing all our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities!

We also accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Call the office today to set an appointment!

4 Critical Reasons to Maintain Good Dental Health

In times of COVID and in 2021, it’s especially important for everyone to take good care of their overall health. One way to help do that is to maintain good dental health. There are many benefits to brushing and flossing regularly, to keeping teeth and gums in good shape, and to visiting Dr. Jim DeCapite twice a year for a thorough check-up. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we always stress to our patients in the Metro Detroit area that their dental health impacts their overall health.

Dr. Jim DeCapite wants everyone in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding region to know the four critical reasons to maintain good dental health:

  • Keeping the immune system healthy: It is more important than ever to keep the body’s immune system functioning at its best now. Good dental health practices can reduce the likelihood of infections in the mouth that can cause the immune system to go into overload.
  • Maintaining heart health: We check our patients regularly for infections and inflammation caused by bacteria in the mouth, including gingivitis, because that can play a significant role in clogging arteries. Patients with infections of the gum could potentially be at a greater risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Managing diabetes complications: Gum disease can also influence the body’s insulin resistance. We know that our patients with diabetes, especially, need to maintain good dental health because people who have dental health issues may have a more difficult time controlling their blood sugar levels. Patients with diabetes need to take extra care in maintaining good dental health, to help prevent further complications.
  • Preventing some digestive issues: The digestive process starts with chewing. When there are problems such as missing or painful teeth that keep the chemical processes from working correctly, it can cause other issues in the digestive system. Maintaining good dental health can help improve overall digestive health.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage everyone in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about the many ways good dental health can impact overall good health.

Our office is open by appointment. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. Contact our office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

Happy Easter, everyone.

5 Toothpaste Tips for Metro Detroit Dental Health

Deciding which toothpaste to use can be a challenge. There are so many different varieties on the store shelves these days. It is hard to know which is the best. The main thing to remember, of course, is that using toothpaste to brush twice a day is very important to good dental health for our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding area on the West Side of Metro Detroit. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to brush regularly and to know what kind of toothpaste is best for their specific needs.

Dr. Jim DeCapite shares five toothpaste tips for good dental health. When choosing a toothpaste, consider our five tips for dental health:

  • Consistency: The goal is to get everyone to brush their teeth regularly. Choosing a consistency that works for the family is the best option, whether that is a paste, a gel, baking soda, or even powdered toothpaste.
  • Sensitivity: The choice of toothpaste is very important for people with sensitive teeth. Toothpaste designed just for sensitive teeth can help by protecting teeth against the irritants that cause them pain. There are many over-the-counter toothpaste brands that contain ingredients to help block pain signals from reaching the nerves of teeth and that can work well to calm sensitive teeth.
  • Whitening: Regardless of the claims, toothpaste generally does not actually whiten teeth. Rather, whitening toothpaste contains scrubbing materials that remove stains, providing short-term results. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer teeth whitening treatments that can provide an almost permanent solution for a dull smile!
  • Cavity prevention: Dental health depends on preventing cavities and using a toothpaste that contains fluoride can help protect teeth against those cavities. The fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, protecting teeth from acid damage.
  • Flavors: Another factor in making sure everyone in the family uses the toothpaste regularly is choosing one with the desired flavor. When family members look forward to brushing their teeth, that’s a win for everyone! While the adults may prefer minty or cinnamon flavors, children may be more inclined to brush their teeth regularly if they can look forward to a fruity-flavored toothpaste.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage our patients to ask any questions about dental health, including which toothpaste is best for their needs.

Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.  Our professional dental team is ready to help all our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities!
