5 Important Dentist Recommendations for Sensitive Teeth

Many of our patients across Metro Detroit tell us they have sensitive teeth. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we work with each one to find the reasons for any discomfort they may have when they come to us. We want all our patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding communities to have healthy and happy smiles.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers five recommendations for patients with sensitive teeth:

  • Maintain a clean mouth: Sensitivity to hot and cold food and drink can become worse if the teeth and gums are not kept clean. Regular brushing and flossing can help alleviate these symptoms.
  • Use a medicated toothpaste or mouth rinse: Brushing gently and regularly with products made especially for sensitive teeth is helpful for our patients. An abrasive toothpaste can aggravate sensitive teeth.
  • Avoid acidic foods: Citrus fruits and juices, coffee, carbonated sodas, and carbs that contain a lot of sugar can also aggravate sensitive teeth. Our patients who consume these foods can help alleviate their sensitivity by waiting at least one hour before brushing and having a glass of milk in the meantime to neutralize the acids.
  • Try a mouth guard to prevent grinding: Teeth grinding wears away the enamel and that can make teeth more sensitive. The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry are happy to work with patients to see if an Occlusal Guard can help with grinding and with sensitive teeth.
  • Have Decapite check for gum disease: Sensitive teeth may actually be the result of gum issues. Receding or diseased gums cannot protect the teeth like they are supposed to and so the result is that the teeth are more sensitive than they need to be.

Doctor Jim wants our patients in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding west side to enjoy having a healthy mouth, without worrying about their sensitive teeth. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Tips for Managing That Valentine’s Sweet Tooth

The sweetest holiday of all is coming up in February. Valentine’s Day is always celebrated with love and with candy! At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want everyone in the Metro Detroit area to feel the love, but not necessarily the effects of the chocolates and candy hearts on dental health. Enjoy the day and enjoy indulging in a few sweet treats but remember to keep that smile happy and healthy!

Many of us are still recovering from the Christmas and New Years and we have made resolutions for better dental health in 2020.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three great tips for patients everywhere that will help manage that sweet tooth now and throughout the year.

  • Sweeten your breath with sugarless gum: Although it does not sound very romantic, chewing sugarless gum helps rinse off and neutralize acids that contribute to decay. Of course, a nice wintergreen or peppermint sugarless gum can also sweeten the breath for that special sweetie!
  • Indulge in healthy treats: Finish off a romantic dinner with fresh fruit and cheese instead of a sugary dessert. Crunchy fruits like apples and pears are best for dental health and cheese provides the calcium needed for healthy tooth enamel.
  • Enjoy a healthy drink: Water is the best drink for dental health, particularly tap water enhanced with fluoride. Milk is also a great drink for strong, healthy teeth. For a little more taste and fizz, try diluted fruit juice and plain sparkling water.

The staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wishes everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day, full of healthy treats and good dental health. Our staff is ready to help all our patients maintain their dental health during the sweet holidays and all year long. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

We look forward to meeting the dental needs of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!

4 Keys to Good Holiday Season Dental Health

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Holidays to all; and to all, good dental health! ‘Tis the season for candy canes, holiday cookies, and hosts of sugary treats in the Metro Detroit area! While we enjoy the festive gatherings with family and friends, we also encourage everyone to take the time to care for those teeth and gums. Now is a great time to get started on a resolution for better dental health!

The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wishes all of our patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding communities the happiest of holidays and good dental health in the coming year.

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers four keys to maintaining good dental health throughout the holiday season and into 2020:

  • Remember the 2×2 rule: Brush twice a day for two minutes each time. Brushing is especially important after a day of family meals and sugary holiday treats.
  • Floss at least once a day: Flossing is critical for removing plaque. The DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry staff is happy to work with our patients on proper flossing techniques that make it a little easier and more effective.
  • Stay hydrated: Holiday parties often feature sugary punch, sometimes spiked. Sugar cookies, sweet cakes, and Christmas candy abound! Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and to keep teeth clean between brushings.
  • Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables: Often there are also plenty of veggie trays at family gatherings and holiday parties. Enjoy the fresh, crunchy fruits and veggies that are healthier for teeth, gums, and the rest of the body!

The holiday season is busy. Make time now to call the office for a checkup and cleaning to start the new year off with great dental health. We always look forward to seeing all of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We welcome new patients as well! Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Reasons for Livonians to Consider Dental Implants

Thanksgiving and the upcoming holiday season will bring lots of gatherings with family and friends and lots of great food made right in the Metro Detroit area! At this time of year especially, many dental patients are curious about the options for replacing missing or broken teeth, so they can have a healthier and more attractive smile for Christmas. Some patients are embarrassed and some simply want to be able to eat with more confidence.

Dr. Jim DeCapite is an expert with dental implants and is happy to share information about making new teeth for those patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding communities who are ready to explore options for a healthier, happier smile.

Dr. DeCapite and his professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wish everyone a happy holiday season and offer three reasons to consider dental implants:

  • Implants are permanent: Unlike dentures that must be removed daily, implants are permanent teeth. The implants are tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.
  • Implants help preserve facial structure: Bones in the jaw can deteriorate when teeth are missing. Replacing those teeth with permanent implants helps to preserve the facial structure by preventing further deterioration. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to have strong teeth and a healthy mouth!
  • Implants give our patients more confidence: Implants are just like real teeth. They don’t come out accidentally so eating can be enjoyable again, without pain or fear. Smiling is easier, too. Implants are comfortable, appear natural, and with good care and regular visits to the dentist, they can last a lifetime.

Our staff is happy to answer any questions our patients may have about dental implants. Now is a great time to call the office for a holiday checkup and cleaning, and to learn more about dental implant options. We enjoy seeing all our patients and welcome new patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities throughout the year. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

4 Questions to Ask the Dentist During a Dental Checkup

As the Metro Detroit weather turns cooler, we look forward to Halloween and the upcoming holiday season. Life seems to get a little busier this time of year, doesn’t it? Before the family gatherings and celebrations with friends and co-workers begin, we urge our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, and Plymouth communities to take the time to schedule a fall checkup and cleaning.

The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is very happy to answer any questions about dental health! Dr. Jim DeCapite has over 30 years’ experience and brings a wealth of knowledge to everyday clinical practice.

We suggest four great questions to ask the dentist during a fall checkup, for improved dental health for our patients and their family:

  • Am I using the right toothpaste? There are so many types and brands of toothpaste available today that it can be very confusing. Dr. DeCapite and his professional staff are happy to discuss our patients’ particular needs in regard to the appropriate type of toothpaste to use for the best results for teeth and gums.
  • Should I whiten my teeth? At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we help our patients decide if tooth whitening is for them. We provide this service, right in our office, using advanced restorative procedures to give our patients a brighter smile!
  • How does my dental health affect other areas of my overall health? We want our patients to be healthy and happy. We are always glad to discuss how other health issues may be affected by the health of their teeth and gums.
  • How can I reassure my child about visiting the dentist? We understand that children (and many adults) are intimidated by a visit to the dentist. We teach children the proper way to take care of their teeth and they learn that going to the dentist can be fun!

Always feel free to ask questions during a visit to our Livonia office! Our friendly and helpful staff is knowledgeable and concerned about all our patients’ dental health. Be sure to call the office today for a fall checkup and cleaning. We enjoy seeing all our patients and we welcome new patients on the westside of Detroit and the western suburbs throughout the year. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

The Demystified Dental Health Myths!

Patient education is one of our top priorities in Livonia. The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry wants everyone in the Metro Detroit area to understand how important it is to take great care of their teeth and gums – and to know the impact of neglecting that care. We understand that there are a lot of myths about dental care and want to make sure our patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding areas know all the facts.

Dr. Jim DeCapite demystifies five common myths about dental health:

  • Brushing harder is better: In fact, brushing too hard can harm the protective enamel on the teeth as well as the gums! Likewise, using a brush with bristles that are too hard can be harmful to the teeth. A soft-bristled toothbrush is recommended for most people.
  • Chewing sugarless gum works just as well as brushing: At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we do recommend to our patients that they chew sugarless gum. It helps keep teeth clean between brushing but brushing and flossing are still critical for removing plaque.
  • Flossing isn’t necessary for dental health: Many patients believe that brushing once a day is enough to keep teeth and gums clean. However, flossing helps reach the places that brushing might not necessarily get completely clean. It’s important to brush twice a day and to floss at least once a day, every day!
  • Gum disease is only a dental issue: Researchers have found strong connections between heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues and the presence of gum disease. Bacteria can flow from infected gums through the blood stream to affect the health of many other areas of the body.
  • Dental visits are just for problems: In fact, a dental checkup can help prevent problems. A regular checkup and cleaning can ensure that the professional team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry will be able to spot potential cavities, gum disease, or other dental health concerns before they become bigger issues.

Call for your regular checkup and cleaning today. Feel free to ask us any questions you may have about dental myths you may have heard. We always look forward to seeing our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities throughout the year. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

3 Tips for Staying Healthy in the Detroit Summer

Who does not love the summer months in the Metro Detroit area? The sun, warmth, fresh air, and cool nights give us so many fun ways to get outside and enjoy the summer days and night. Summer can also bring the heat of July and August in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding areas of the westside. The professional staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry understands that everyone gets busy with summer vacations and travel plans up north, but we all still need to take steps to stay healthy during the summer.

Dr. Jim DeCapite is happy to share these three tips for staying healthy when it’s the summer in the city:

  • Stay hydrated: Summer heat can dehydrate us quickly. We encourage everyone to drink fresh water regularly in hot weather, for good dental health, and to keep the body hydrated. Limit or avoid sugary soft and sports drinks that are not good for dental health!
  • Focus on healthy, teeth-friendly foods: Staying healthy can taste good! Choose dental-friendly foods like cheese and yogurt when deciding on snacks for a fun summer day of family activities. Fresh fruit and vegetables like apples, carrots, cucumbers, and celery are great healthy choices to pack in a cooler for a family outing and great choices for healthy teeth!
  • Take time to brush and floss: Summer is busy with trips, vacations, kids’ activities, and family gatherings. Take the time to stay healthy during the busy summer months by remembering the 2×2 rule. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time to keep teeth healthy. Take the time to floss at least once a day to stay healthy throughout the summer!

Summer is also a great time for a checkup and dental cleaning for the whole family. Do it before the school year starts. Our professional team at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry looks forward to visits from our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities all year. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.

Call the office today to get started on good dental health and good overall health!

5 Important Points about Toothpaste

Brushing twice a day or more is very important to good dental health; just as importantly, deciding what toothpaste to use when brushing is important as well. There are so many choices available on store shelves in Livonia, Redford, and the surrounding Westside that it can sometimes be overwhelming. There are many different brands and different varieties of toothpaste within each brand, all designed for different needs. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to brush regularly and to know what kind of toothpaste is best for their specific needs.

Dr. Jim DeCapite shares five points patients should consider when choosing the right toothpaste:

  • Cavity prevention: Toothpaste that contains fluoride can help protect teeth against cavities and can fight sensitivity. Fluoride helps make tooth enamel stronger, protecting teeth from acid damage.
  • Whitening: Toothpaste generally does not actually whiten teeth. Instead, it contains scrubbing materials that remove stains. Whitening toothpaste can provide short-term results. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, though, we offer teeth whitening treatments that can provide a near-permanent solution for a dull smile!
  • Flavors: Choosing the right flavor can help family members look forward to brushing their teeth and that’s a win for everyone! Children, especially, may be more inclined to brush their teeth regularly if they have fruity-flavored toothpaste to enjoy. Adults may prefer mint or even cinnamon flavors.
  • Consistency: There is also a wide range of toothpaste types available when it comes to choosing a gel, paste, baking soda, or even powdered toothpaste. Again, choosing the consistency that makes family members want to brush their teeth is always the best option.
  • Sensitivity: For patients with sensitive teeth, toothpaste designed for their needs can help by protecting teeth against the irritants that cause them pain. Over-the-counter toothpaste contains ingredients that can help block pain signals from reaching the nerves of their teeth, helping to calm sensitive teeth.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage our patients to discuss all of their dental needs with our expert staff, including which toothpaste is best for them. Our office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads.  Our professional dental team is ready to help all our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities!

4 Tips for Keeping Livonia Gums Healthy and Happy

Dental health is all about keeping our teeth clean and cavity free. Another very important part of dental health, though, is taking care of our gums! Our gums are, literally, the base for our healthy teeth. Gum disease can cause serious problems, including infections and tooth decay. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we like to educate our patients in the Metro Detroit area on the importance of taking good care of teeth and gums to ensure all-around dental health.

Proper treatment of gums can lead to a happy, healthy mouth. Dr. Jim DeCapite enjoys sharing tips with patients in Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, and Plymouth, including these four tips for keeping gums in great shape:

  • Floss every day: Flossing removes food and plaque that the toothbrush doesn’t always reach. Tartar, which can lead to gum disease, forms when food and plaque is not properly removed from between the teeth and along the gum line.
  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste: Brush for two minutes each time, using a fluoride toothpaste that carries the ADA seal of acceptance. Jim DeCapiteand his expert professional staff have lots of tips on proper brushing techniques that will keep teeth and gums healthy!
  • Stop smoking: Patients who smoke or use other tobacco products are more susceptible to gum disease and have a more difficult time fighting it off.
  • Get regular dental checkups: Jim DeCapiteand his expert staff are trained to spot the early warning signs of gum disease. They are eager to help patients in the Metro Detroit communities by removing potentially damaging tartar and checking for symptoms that can be easily treated before they become bigger problems.

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients to enjoy happy, healthy teeth and gums. We are excited about helping all of our patients maintain good dental health throughout the spring and the rest of the year.

Our professional staff is ready to meet the dental needs of our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and surrounding Metro Detroit communities. We are conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Call the office today to set an appointment!
