3 Fascinating and Fun Dental Facts

Taking good care of the teeth and gums can be a fun and happy experience. At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we want our patients in the Livonia, Redford, Dearborn Heights, Plymouth, and the surrounding Metro Detroit communities to learn more about dental health, including some interesting trivia. It is important to stay educated about the latest techniques and treatments, but it’s also fun to look at some intriguing facts about teeth and dental health!

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers three fascinating and fun dental facts, for the enjoyment and knowledge of all our patients in the Motor City and beyond:

  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes have been around for a while: Over 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians were using a form of toothpaste. The first aromatic toothpaste was produced by Colgate in 1873 and was sold in jars. Twenty-three years later, the company began selling dental cream packaged in collapsible tubes. Many items have been used as toothbrushes throughout history; however, the first nylon bristled toothbrush was invented in 1938. The next year, the first electric toothbrush was sold.
  • Some animals have an enormous number of teeth: An adult human has 32 teeth. Sharks, on other hand, can have 10 times as many teeth, lined up in five rows. The long-snouted spinner dolphin has 252 teeth. An armadillo can have as many as 104 teeth. Oddly, though, the Blue Whale, which is the largest mammal on earth, eats only tiny shrimp because it has no teeth!
  • Healthy teeth and gums affect many other areas: Good dental health is very important for overall health. Poor oral health, especially gum disease has been linked to several chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Dr. DeCapite has extensive knowledge about dental health that comes from over 30 years of experience. He and his team know how to keep smiles healthy and happy. We use the latest in dental technology and materials to ensure our patients are comfortable and happy with their results!

The expert staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry invites our patients to visit us in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads, for regular cleanings and checkups to improve their dental health and their overall health.

We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!
