5 Fascinating Facts About Teeth and Dental Health

At DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we not only help our patients in Livonia and the Motor City take care of their teeth and gums, but we also like to help them learn more about dental health. Teeth and gums have not really changed that much, but the way we’ve treated them certainly has changed throughout the centuries! A little dental trivia and history can be fun!

Dr. Jim DeCapite offers these five fascinating facts about teeth and dental health:

  • Tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the body: Teeth are harder than bones! Unlike bones, though, teeth cannot repair themselves. Once a tooth is broken, it must be repaired or replaced by a professional dentist.
  • Early toothpaste was probably made out of pulverized eggshells and oxen hooves: The first toothpaste with flavor was not invented until the mid-1800s. Toothpaste in a squeezable tube followed about two decades later.
  • Early dental floss was made of silk: In the early 1800s, a New Orleans dentist told his patients to use strands of silk between their teeth to clean them better. Nylon dental floss was not invented until World War II.
  • Teeth are as unique as fingerprints: Dental records are often used for identification because no two people’s teeth are alike, not even identical twins!
  • Regular dental cleanings can help prevent heart attacks. Inflammation is common to gum disease and heart disease. A recent study found that people who had their teeth professionally scaled at least once every two years were 24% less likely to have a heart attack.

The professional dental staff at DeCapite Family and Cosmetic Dentistry invites our patients to visit us for regular cleanings to improve their dental health and their overall health. We use the latest in dental technology and materials to ensure our patients are comfortable and happy with their results!

The office is conveniently located in Livonia, near the intersection of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads. We accept new patients and, of course, all emergencies. Contact us today to set an appointment!
